Hunting with hounds has been a traditional aristocratic leisure for many centuries.

It became the prototype of dog racing. Dog racing is a sporting event that is a race of dogs chasing a bait in the form of an artificial rabbit or hare along a circular track. The winner of the race is the dog that crosses the finish line first. Dog racing is one of the types of cynological sports accepted by the International Cynological Federation. In England the first greyhound races with an artificial hare took place in the 17th century. The greyhound is considered the fastest breed of dog. Other breeds which can also participate in the races are Irish Wolfhounds, Afghans, Azawakhs, Russian Borzois, Whippets, Italian Greyhounds, Salukis, Slugs . Racings of greyhound chasing a mechanical hare have become widespread in Europe, as in many European countries real hunting with greyhounds is prohibited on compassionate grounds. However, breeders strive not to lose the exceptional working qualities of greyhounds and to satisfy the hunting needs of these dogs.
